Our expert craftsmen have years of experience in stone floor polishing, working with various different varieties of stone ensuring they are able to bring out the best in yours.

Although, it is believed that there are somewhere near 9000 different varieties and it would be impossible for anyone to know everyone, we are able to classify - using a geologist's classification system - all types of stone into three distinct groups. Knowing the differences between these groups can solve most of the problems a craftsman will face with stone floor cleaning and polishing.

The Stone Flooring Cleaning Process

There are three basic steps in the stone floor cleaning and re-finishing process. Grinding, honing and polishing. Each of these steps can be performed alone or in combination with one another.

Stone floor grinding is the process by which the surface is aggressively abraded to remove large stocks of the stone. This step of the stone floor cleaning process is usually recommended when stone tiles are uneven. Lippage is the term given to uneven tiles that are set higher than one another. Grinding is recommended when the lippage exceeds 1/8 inch or if one desires to have a completely flat floor.

Honing is the process of smoothing the stone with the use of abrasives. Although not as aggressive as grinding, it does require the use of water and be quite messy. Honing is performed to remove scratches and will not remove lippage. The honing process is usually achieved using diamond abrasives although there are alternatives on the market. While the abrasive that is used is less important, the skill level of the stone floor craftsman if imperative for the outcome of stone floor cleaning. Honing can leave a stone floor with very little shine, although some stones will acquire a satin-like lustre at very high hones.

In addition to our 3 step stone floor cleaning process, Advance Group are able to provide some very specialist services for the removal of stains from your stone floor including stain removal, stone floor sealing and protective coatings.

Stone Floor Polishing

After restoring and cleaning your stone floor, we can also offer a stone floor polishing service to really give your new stone floor a fantastic shine, and receive the recognition it deserves.

Stone Floor Polishing is defined as placing a high reflective finish on the surface of the stone. Stone Floor Polishing is usually accomplished with super-fine abrasive powders but can also be achieved with super-fine diamond abrasives.
